Surviving a Toxic Leader

November 29, 20243 min read

Toxic leadership is a hot topic, and for good reason. In my recent interview with DubaiEye 103.8, we dove into a provocative question: “Is your boss a psychopath?” While the term might sound dramatic, the reality is that certain leadership behaviours can create environments that feel just as damaging. In this blog, I’ll unpack some of the key insights from the interview and provide practical advice for those dealing with toxic leadership.

Why Do These Traits Develop in the Workplace?

Toxic leadership traits often don’t arise in isolation - they’re shaped by organisational cultures and pressures. Here are some key drivers:

  • Short-Term Focus: Many workplaces reward leaders who prioritise immediate results over long-term success. This pressure can encourage traits like ruthlessness and a lack of empathy.

  • Lack of Leadership Culture: When organisations don’t invest in leadership training or values-driven leadership, individuals are left to figure it out themselves. This can allow destructive behaviours to thrive.

  • Unchecked Power Dynamics: In hierarchical organisations, leaders can go unchallenged, creating a space where toxic tendencies are left unchecked.

While these factors don’t excuse harmful behaviours, they do help us understand why such traits develop—and why they can be so persistent.

What Can You Do If You’re Facing a Toxic Leader?

Dealing with a toxic boss is incredibly challenging. Here are some actionable steps you can take to protect yourself and navigate the situation:

  1. Document Everything: Keep detailed records of incidents, including dates, times, and specifics of problematic behaviours. This documentation can be vital if you decide to escalate the issue.

  2. Attempt to Set Boundaries Early: Politely but firmly communicate your limits and expectations. While this won’t always work, it’s important to establish what’s acceptable.

  3. Reach Out for Peer Support: Talk to trusted colleagues who might share your concerns. A support network can offer advice, validation, and solidarity.

  4. Try HR if Possible: If your organisation has a functioning HR department, consider raising your concerns. However, be mindful that HR’s primary allegiance is often to the company, not the individual.

  5. Recognise When It’s Time to Move: Sometimes, the healthiest option is to leave. Toxic environments rarely change quickly, and staying too long can take a toll on your mental health and career.

The Hard Truth: Good Bosses Make Good Companies

It’s tempting to think the perfect company or role is out there, but the truth is that great workplaces are created by great leaders. Finding a good boss - someone who values and supports their team - should be a top priority in your career journey.

Remember, a supportive leader can make even a challenging role fulfilling, while a toxic boss can turn even the best job into a nightmare.
